Festivalbiertje used to be a derogatory term for a watered down beer, common at Dutch festivals to prevent the visitors from getting really drunk and smashing each others brain in.
Since the boys from Oedipus started brewing it was the start of a whole new scene. No festival around Amsterdam in the right set of mind will forget to offer these guys their own stand to promote and sell their beer. Oedipus is the next generation of Dutch beers and they can be found in nearly every new beer cafe at the moment.
They started off with two beers: Mannenliefde (manlove) and Mama (both referring to the myth of Oedipus who slept with his mother and killed his father) and now have a whole range of exotically named beers that have no reference whatsoever to the Greek tale anymore.
If you have only one beer to drink, be sure you make it the Mannenliefde.
This beer is flavored with Sezchuan peppercorns and lemongrass and is truly refreshing and not to be compared to the regular beers on tap in most of the bars.
Since 2015 the guys finally opened their own taproom, located in a warehouse in the north of Amsterdam. They host several parties and other events and are still one of the Amsterdam hotspots, so be certain to hop on the ferry and drop by.
